When should you hit and stand in blackjack?

Blackjack strategy 101: What is the hit & stand betting system?

Blackjack is one of the world’s oldest and most popular casino table games. That is certainly true for online casinos around the US, and it is usually found at all top internet casinos where you can play. Although its exact origins are unknown, the game was first mentioned in Spanish literature around 1600 as a card game called ‘twenty-one.’ Over time, the game made its way over to the USA, where it was renamed blackjack.

An essential part of how to play blackjack is knowing when to take extra cards to get as close to 21 as you can or when to stick with what you already have. Taking more cards is known as hitting and staying as you are is known as standing. But when should you do each?

When should you hit in blackjack?

Whether you play at an NJ online casino or internet casinos in other states, knowing when to hit is essential. The most important time to hit is when you have 11 or less in your hand. That is because that total is unlikely to beat the dealer, and you cannot go bust (exceed 21). Hitting on 11 or less will only improve what you have.

When thinking about hitting, you should also take into account what the dealer has in his hand. Standard versions of blackjack will usually see the dealer’s first card upturned to view and act upon. If the dealer has an ace, for example, you should consider hitting if you have 17 or under in your hand. That is because the ace can count for 1 or 11, thus meaning you have to potentially be braver to win the hand. It is also wise to hit on so-called Soft Hands of your own that contain an ace unless it is a Soft 19 or 20.

What is a good time to stand in blackjack?

It can often be just as handy to know when to stand in blackjack. It can stop you from going bust and keep you in the game to hopefully beat the dealer. Of course, common sense tells you that having 21 in your hand means you should not take any more cards. It is a good idea to stand when you have a hand worth 18 to 20 – this is because the probability of going bust from taking another card is very high. We have already mentioned Soft Hands, which contain aces. If you have a soft 18, it is usually advised to stand if the dealer’s card is a 7 or 8. If the dealer has a 4, 5, or 6 initially, then it is worth standing if you have 12 or over.

Hit or stand – the key to successful online blackjack

Blackjack is not only a very exciting game to play at online casinos but also one that is relatively simple. That is the primary reason that it has become so popular with online players. One strategy you have to get down, though, is when to hit and stand. Getting a feel for this will help you win more and get the most from this excellent card game.
